Building Momentum: Thoughts From the CEO, May 2024

Greetings CHPA Community,

You may know that I enjoy following sports. Lately, I have been even more immersed, particularly because it is playoff season for basketball and hockey. Plus, baseball season is well underway, and our five boys are all playing at different levels. During this time, I am reminded that sometimes winning is more than X’s, O’s, and having a good game plan. There is a force that can supersede all these things: momentum.

Momentum cannot be quantified as I equate it more to energy. Once things start rolling in a team’s favor it is hard to stop, but I have also experienced how it can swing back and forth throughout a game. It is not something to take for granted and it needs to be intentionally fueled with positivity.

Momentum also comes to mind for me as I think about CHPA in the context of looking at our network’s performance year over year. In this role, as Interim CEO, I have been challenged to be patient with results because of things like the runout periods for payer claims. Now that we have most of our 2023 year-end results, we can see plenty of signs of momentum thanks to our dedicated staff and partnership with our members.

  • Financial distributions to our members have increased by 42%,
  • annual wellness visits (AWVs) are increasing slowly but surely,
  • HCC recapture rates have increased,
  • our Medicare Advantage Starts rating is climbing,
  • and we have improved on 12 out of 13 Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) quality performance metrics!

This is a lot to celebrate and the CHPA team continues to appreciate the dedicated efforts of our partners at the Community Health Centers. However, to keep this trajectory, we cannot lose our focus on accurately capturing the clinical complexity of our patients and designing ways to continuously improve the high-quality and low-cost services our members provide.

I am confident that when we look back on 2024 results, we will see that our momentum has continued thanks to our ongoing partnership. Thank you for all you do for our patients, communities, and statewide network.

Ben Wiederholt, Interim CEO
