Thoughts from the CEO, Nov 2022

This time of year always reminds me of the fluidity of life and the swift pace at which it flows. I always have a sense of surprise that we are about to turn the page on another year. The transition from one year to the next is a reminder of how constant change is, and that reality is amplified by weather fluctuations and holidays. With change can come a sense of loss, and my encouragement is to also notice the sense of hope and excitement that transitions bring.

Over the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of spending retreat sessions with our board and staff. The formats have been relatively standard as we discuss things like the external healthcare environment, take an internal look at our operations and performance, and use all of that as context for future planning. There has been a uniqueness in these meetings and I am struck by how it feels like Community Health Provider Alliance (CHPA) is on the brink of a significant shift. For example, we reviewed the existing language of our mission, vision, and values. There was consensus among both the board and staff that while those words served an important purpose when the organization was founded in 2014, the time feels right to update these statements. Just as the healthcare system has evolved, albeit slower than many of us would prefer, CHPA has an opportunity to reflect on what we have become and who we seek to be moving forward.

There are plenty of reasons for hope and excitement in the world of Value-Based Care and for CHPA specifically. At the national level, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has established a goal to have all Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries and a vast majority of Medicaid Beneficiaries in a care relationship with accountability for quality and total cost of care by 2030. At the state level, Colorado Community Health Network (CCHN), Colorado Community Managed Care Network (CCMCN), and CHPA continue to unify efforts to proactively prepare for Phase III of the Accountable Care Collaborative by leveraging each organizations’ strengths to make the delivery system more effective, efficient, and equitable for Medicaid members.

Stay tuned for developments around the mission, vision, values, and more specifics of our 2023 work plan. All of us at CHPA are mindful that we are here to support the inspiring work of Community Health Center members. We always welcome your feedback on how we can do that best. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to quality and care to all people.
